From Ball to Gate: Exploring the Diversity of Hy-Lok’s High-Pressure Valve Types

High-pressure valves and fittings are crucial in various applications and industries, but how do you know which valve series suits your application? With so many available options and different series, it can be challenging to decipher the best solution for your particular application.

At Hy-Lok Canada, we proudly offer a vast catalogue of fittings and valves that cater to each industry’s individual needs. Hy-Lok is internationally recognized as the standard for manufacturing products with leak-free integrity and reliable performance.

Different Valve Applications

High-pressure fittings and valves are not one-size-fits-all; there are many determining factors to consider before finding the correct option. Fittings are crucial components in industries like oil and gas, nitrogen, biochemical, instrumentation, and more.

What type of fluid or gas is passing through the fitting or valve? The substance will determine what kind of material may be used. For example, in gaseous oxygen services, copper, copper alloys, or nickel-copper alloys are preferred because common metals and alloys like 316 stainless steel are combustible in the presence of O2.

Common Valve Types

  • Ball valves are quarter-turn valves that use a hollow perforated pivoting ball to control fluid flow. They are often utilized in shutdown and control applications due to their durability, reliability and consistency.
  • Check valves let pressure through the system while preventing pressure from flowing back into the system.
  • Needle valves are flow regulators, allowing the user precise control of the flow and pressure of the fluids.
  • Globe valves are similar to ball valves in that they control the flow and pressure of fluid systems and can completely shut off the flow. However, the globe valves have a much higher pressure loss than ball valves when fully opened.
  • Gate valves can completely open or shut off the flow of liquids and gasses in a pipeline, with either a fully open or closed position. Gate valves can have a greater flow capacity compared to ball valves because they are often larger in diameter.

The Necessity of Leak-Free Fittings

Critical applications like natural gas or CO2 lines must be leak-free because even the slightest leakage can have catastrophic consequences. At Hy-Lok, we manufacture and produce leak-free valves and fittings that you can trust because the safety of our users is our top priority.

Choosing the correct valve is about more than just ease of use and compatibility; it’s about safety. Using the incorrect type of fitting can have detrimental effects without an air-tight seal, even in non-critical applications! One leaky valve can shut down an entire site, or worse, cause a chain reaction that could destroy a site.
