Why Stainless Steel?
As you probably already know, stainless steel doesn’t rust and is highly corrosion-resistant, but do you know why?
Stainless steel alloy contains approximately 20% of chromium, which forms a thin layer of chromium oxide when reacting with oxygen. As a result, this thin layer of chromium oxide eliminates the possibility of corrosion as it prevents oxygen from reacting with the stainless steel surface. Chromium oxide also has self-preparing properties that elongate the longevity of stainless steel fittings.
Types of Stainless Steel
There are typically two types of stainless steel grades used when manufacturing fittings: 304 and 316 stainless steel. The primary difference between both grades is the addition of molybdenum alloy which significantly enhances the corrosion resistance, especially against chlorides and other industrial fluids. While 316 stainless steel contains molybdenum, 304 stainless steel doesn’t. Consequently, many industrial applications only use 316 stainless steel fittings as they demonstrate higher corrosion resistance.
