Needle valves play an important role in fluid control systems by helping to control the safe, efficient operation of industrial machinery and components. With the demand for high-pressure instruments rising on the market, needle valves with greater pressure ratings have come into prominence as well as rounded solutions. Below, we’ll explore some of the basics of how needle valves functions, as well as highlight some of the solutions available from Hy-Lok Canada. Read on to find out more!
What Are Needle Valves?
Constructed with a similar purpose to shutoff valves, needle valves are used to start, stop, and regulate the flow rate within a fluid control system or pipeline. Because of their smaller stature, needle valves are commonly applied for precise regulation in systems that require a constant, calibrated flow of liquid or gas. Unlike shutoff valves, needle valves have a unique, needle like design (hence the name) that features a long, tapered point at the end of the valve stem as well as a hand wheel or small handle that helps control the position of the plunger. This structure helps ensure precise control as demanded by applications in the plumbing, automotive, chemical, medical, and related industries.
How Do They Operate?
Needles valves can be operated manually or automatically, depending on their design. Manually operated models use the hand wheel to control the distance between the plunger and the valve seat. When the hand wheel is turned, the plunger lifts to open the valve and allow fluid to pass through; conversely, when it is turned the opposite direction, the plunger moves closer to the seat to decrease the flow rate or close the valve.
Automated valves are typically connected to a hydraulic motor that opens and closes the valve system and adjusts the plunger’s position according to timers or external data.
Applications
Needle valves have a wide range of applications spanning multiple industries. Predominately used to control flow and protect gauges from damage caused by pressure surges, needle valves are ideal for use in systems using lighter and less viscous materials, as well as low-pressure hydraulic systems.
High-pressure needle valves are well suited to systems with higher temperature or pressure demands, and are typically made from steel, bronze, brass, and other durable alloys.
